- Introduction
-
- Personal Librarian is a FileMaker Pro 2.0 database designed to help you keep
- track of your personal library. With Personal Librarian, you can keep track
- of all the vital statistics of your book collection, including:
-
- • Where and when you purchased your books.
- • Where your books are stored.
- • The current size and value of your collection.
- • To whom you have books loaned out.
-
- Personal Librarian sports a consistent and easy to learn interface, and it
- provides a variety of reports and flexible searching features. No matter how
- many books you own, Personal Librarian can help you keep better tabs on your
- collection.
-
- Personal Librarian requires 13” or larger color monitor to display properly.
- It will work on B&W monitors, but it won't be pretty.
-
-
- What's New in Version 2.0?
-
- • Color! I finally got a color machine at home, so Personal Librarian 2.0
- is now in 256 glorious colors. The overall look is much more pleasing to
- the eye. (Well, my eye at least.<G>)
-
- • I got rid of the ungainly ISBN check digit field. Now PL simply displays
- a red warning message if you've entered an invalid ISBN.
-
- • I've cleaned up all the reports and made them more consistent and easier
- to read..
-
- • And a number of other things I've forgotten, but they're in there. <G>
-
-
- About The Demo Version
-
- The demo version of Personal Librarian is limited to 30 records. I've
- included 30 books from my own collection to give you an idea of how
- the program works. You can enter books from your own collection by typing
- over the existing records. DON'T delete any of the records, as you can't
- create any new records in the demo version.
-
- If you find that you find Personal Librarian useful, I ask that you send
- me a $10 shareware fee. When I receive your registration, I'll send you
- a password that unlocks PL, allowing you to enter as many records as
- FileMaker will allow and giving you full access to all features of the
- database. To print the registration form, chose "About Personal Librarian"
- from the main screen, and click the "Print Registration" button.
-
- If you're a registered user and you've not yet received an unlocked version
- or a password, it's probably because I couldn't read your e-mail address. :-(
- Drop me a note in e-mail, and I'll send you an unlocked copy.

- Hints and Tips
-
- You don't need to read any further in order to use Personal Librarian, but
- these hints and tips will allow you to get the most out of the program.
-
- • Be sure that you have the following fonts installed: Geneva, Helvetica,
- Times, Palatino, and Avant Garde. The TrueType versions of these will
- work, but if you have ATM and the Type 1 versions of the last four,
- Personal Librarian will look better.
-
- • In all of the list views and reports, clicking on the column headers
- (Title, Author, etc.) will sort the list/report by that field.
-
- • Most books now have the Library of Congress Catalog in Publication (CIP)
- data printed on the copyright page. This is the best place to get
- title, author, ISBN, and subject information.
-
- • ISBNs should be entered with the hyphens. For those who are curious,
- the ISBN is always a 10 digit number of the form a-bbbb-cccc-d, where
- a is the country/language code, bbbb is the publisher code, cccc is
- the unique book identifier, and d is the check digit. Larger publishers
- will have fewer digits in their publisher code (e.g. Penguin Books'
- code is two digits - 14) to allow for more digits in the unique book
- field.
-
- • Use the location field to specify a general location, like "Bedroom" or
- "Storage". Use the location code to specify a specific box or shelf.
-
- • Use the comments field to list all the titles and authors of works in an
- anthology.
-
-
